RESUMO

Antitumor effects of glycolysis inhibitors monoiodoacetate and 2-deoxyglucose were studied on Lewis lung carcinoma model. Monoiodoacetate exhibited antitumor and antimetastatic activities, being not inferior of methotrexate (reference drug); however, the preparation also demonstrated high systemic toxicity. 2-Deoxyglucose exhibited only antitumor effect, while its antimetastatic activity did not differ from the result in the group without treatment.

RESUMO

Of 204 patients with infectious endocarditis (IE) treated in the hospital in 1980-2000, 43(21.2%) developed neurological complications. These were: ischemic stroke (72.1%), hemorrhagic stroke (9.3%), both (7%), abscess and subarachnoidal hemorrhage (2.3% for each), meningitis (7%), toxic encephalopathy (11.6%). Neurological complications of IE arose prior to treatment and within the first week of antibacterial therapy in 63% cases, more frequently in the left carotid territory. Neurological complications in IE debute manifested acutely, pareses were more frequent than paralyses, with elevated temperature, low hemoglobin and red cell levels, leukocytosis. MRT detected 8 +/- 4.6 foci in the brain, CT--2 +/- 1.1, on the average. Lethality of IE patients with neurological complications reached 58.1% and was significantly higher than in those without such complications (14.9%, p < 0.001). Overall acturial survival 1 year after the discharge from the hospital was 94.4%, 5-year survival--61.1%, 10-year survival--11%.

RESUMO

According to the structural metabolic theory of radiation injuries radiotoxins perform a leading role in the development of disorders. The experiments have disclosed the characteristic features of the development of toxemia in irradiated organism. These data have served as a ground for studying the efficiency of various methods of detoxication. Metabolic plasmapheresis is seemed to be of most pronounced effect in comparison with other methods of detoxication. On the basis of the results of these studies several practical recommendations were provided for performing an early disintoxicative therapy in patients with radiation injuries.

RESUMO

Changes in the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) isozymic spectrum have been examined in the patients with Stages I-III malignant tumors of the uterus before radiation therapy, during radiation reactions, and after these reactions have been remedied with polydesum and aminocaproic acid. A comparative analysis has shown that the blood serum LDH isozymic spectrum is changed in oncologic patients mainly at the expense of increased content of LDH4 and LDH5. Radiation reactions are associated with a considerable reduction of LDH1 activity and an essential rise of LDH3 and LDH4 activities, and an insignificant elevation of LDH2. The detected shifts in LDH isozymic spectrum during radiation reactions appear to be due to radiation toxemia. Detoxifying therapy with polydesum and epsilon-aminocaproic acid during 3-5 days helped normalize the LDH isozymic ratio.

RESUMO

A hypothesis on blocking factor formation in carcinogenesis is discussed. Destabilisation of cell membranes and increased levels of proteolytic enzymes in tumor tissue are considered to be the trigger mechanism. Protease level in large bowel tumor was found to be higher than in normal tissue. Plasminogen level in cancer patients was significantly higher than in healthy subjects. Application of different experimental schemes of treatment with membrane-stabilizing drugs and an inhibitor of protease was followed by antitumor and antiblocking effects. Sorption of rheumatoid factor and immune complexes from plasma led to a decrease in the blocking activity of plasma in vitro. In cases of rectal cancer, plasmapheresis was followed by tumor regression and a fall in immune complex concentration.
